FNLPM board members elected

Friends of the New London Public Museum (FNLPM) held its 2015 annual membership meeting and dinner Tuesday, March 24, at Shamrock Heights Golf & Supper Club in New London.

During the business meeting, FNLPM members reelected Corinne Rateau to her first full two-year term as a board member. Sheila Villiesse, one of FNLPM’s original board members in 2008, was also elected to a two-year term. They join board members Jennifer Grumann, Brenda Hansen, Carrie Karow, and Paulina Krolow who were not up for reelection.

In other action, outgoing board members Barbara Laib and Nathan Penn were recognized for their years of service. Laib served on the board since 2009 and was treasurer for three years. Penn joined the board in 2012 and served on various committees during his tenure.

Hansen, outgoing president, reported on FNLPM’s accomplishments including the establishment of the Friends of the New London Public Museum Endowment Fund with the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region in early 2014. Hansen said that support by members and donors increased again during the past year enabling FNLPM to continue supporting the museum’s Curiosity Corner and underwrite the stipend and supplies for a summer collections intern for a second year. Hansen then turned over president’s duties to Grumann.

Following the business meeting, museum director Christine Cross updated members on programs and plans for the museum in the upcoming year. She also talked about volunteer opportunities at the museum.

The guest speaker for the evening was Rolf “Wisconsin” Johnson, CEO of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. Johnson’s pres¬entation, “Museums in the 21st Century: Going from Nice to Necessary” addressed the ways in which to¬day’s museums are changing to engage their com¬munities and wider audiences.
