W-F shot put space gets facelift

Weyauwega-Fremont assistant track coach Jeff Gabrilska approached W-F High School athletic director Jeff Fahser about two years ago and had an idea for improving the school’s shot put throwing area.

In the past, the shot put area was far away from the other field events and when snow melted in the early spring, the area was often flooded for early-season practices.

Gabrilska had an idea to move the shot put area to a different, more centralized location. The area is now located between the baseball field and the football concession stand.

“After our first track meet of the season, many coaches complimented the new area and commented how nice they thought it was,” Fahser said. “One coach even said, ‘It is the nicest throwing within a 60 miles radius of Weyauwega,’ a big compliment for a small school.”

Clint Price laid the new cement pad last fall and the W-F maintenance department of Wes Schroeder and Ryan Lemke did the majority of the work.

“The throwing area itself is made up a material that you would see on a warning track at a professional baseball field,” Fahser said. “The materials for the project were provided by Do-All Concrete, Mathwig Excavation and Faulks Brothers. Schroeder and Lemke put in over 60 man hours on the project. The area is bordered by wooden timbers to give the area a fresh and professional look. Next time you are at a Weyauwega-Fremont athletic event outside, take a look at this great piece of work.”
