Vets home to host open house

The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King will hold its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 17.

The family-friendly activities will include live music in the park featuring the Justmann Band, an old car show with approximately 200 cars on display, an antique military vehicle display, boat rides on the Chain O’Lakes, face painting and children’s games.

Veterans home staff will be available with information about admissions, medical services, activities and volunteer opportunities.

Guests will be able to tour the buildings and see firsthand the facilities and services accessible to the veteran members and their families, many of which are exclusive to King and not offered at other long-term care facilities.

New this year will be two ticket booths where people will purchase food tickets and pick up free tickets for boat rides.

Another new addition will be numerous educational forums featuring the veterans home’s partners in care.

The Aging and Disability Resource Center will be on hand to discuss Advanced Care Directives, Guardianship and other services they offer.

Theda Care will offer free healthcare screenings, an overview of palliative care services and “Consider the Conversation” viewing.

The Mobile Vet Center will host an overview about the services offered to veterans and their families, including education about Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

People will also learn how the County Veteran Service Officer may assist them.

Kim Heltemes, author of “Wisconsin Veterans Home at King,” will speak about the history of King in the chapel on the campus.

People may also obtain information about the new Alzheimer’s and Dementia care services at King such as Namaste, Music & Memory and Aromatherapy.

Representatives from various veteran service organizations will be available at their respective display booths to provide information about their organization’s role in the veterans community, both at King and across the nation.

Visitors may also stop in the Marden Center and check out the wood shop, ceramic shop, museum, bowling alley, bar, social room, movie theater, gift shop and coffee shop.
