Schmitt, Thomas

Thomas (Tom) Schmitt, age 78, of New London, passed away on Mother’s Day at his home.

He was born on December 23, 1936 in Kaukauna to the late Milton and Rosemary Schmitt. He graduated from Kaukauna High School and later received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Tom spent over 40 years in education starting as an 8th grade teacher at St. Joe’s in Appleton, and then serving as a guidance counselor in New London, Oconto, and Montello.

Tom is survived by his wife Joan with whom he shared many happy years. Tom was incredibly proud of his four children: Mark, (Gwen), Bryan (Jill), Mike, and Anne (Jeff). Perhaps his greatest joy was watching his grandchildren in their many sports and academic activities: Elizabeth, Sam, Joe, Angela, Emily, Maria, Jenna, Cooper, Jase, and Mitchell. Tom was preceded in death by his brother Chuck, and is survived by his sisters, Ginny (Donny) and Carol (Nick), and brother Lee. Tom was also survived by his beloved dog Molly.

During Tom’s life, he enjoyed many activities which included owning Schmitt Bikes in New London and Hortonville with his son, Bryan. Tom was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a former member of New London Jaycees, Wolf River Men’s Club, Walleyes for Tomorrow, and the International Society of Magicians. Tom enjoyed gardening, and took great pride in his patch of raspberries. He was also very interested in the purple martins that flocked to the colony of houses in his backyard.
