Swatting call pranks area police

A “swatting call” sent Waupaca police, county deputies and Gold Cross paramedics to a home on the 700 block of Eighth Street in Waupaca on Sunday.

The Waupaca County E911 Communications Center received an anonymous call on its non-emergency line at 3:50 p.m. Sunday, May 10.

The caller indicated a female had been shot in the leg and the shooter was still inside the residence and hiding upstairs in a closet.

Upon investigation, authorities determined that a 17-year-old boy at the home had been playing his Xbox game online with an unknown person. The unknown person told the boy that he was going to be “swatting him.”

The police department seized the Xbox and the incident remains under investigation.

Swatting is when a 911 caller reports a false emergency, such as a bomb or shooting incident, and tricks a communications officer into dispatching an emergency response team.
