T-Birds repeat as CWC golf champions

Iola-Scandinavia and Pacelli’s boys’ golf teams had the opportunity to play a little extra golf at the Central Wisconsin Conference meet.

The Thunderbirds won the 11-team meet May 21 with a score of 365, but headed back out on Waupaca’s Foxfire Golf Club with Pacelli’s golfers for a playoff to determine the overall CWC champion.

If that sounds familiar, that’s also what happened last year, with the T-Birds coming out on top. This year’s result was the same.

“This is the second year in a row that we beat Pacelli at the CWC tournament to win conference,” I-S coach Alan Bauer said. “This is also our third conference championship in a row.”

Team scores were I-S (365), Pacelli (369), Manawa (375), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (386), Amherst (392), Shiocton (395), Weyauwega-Fremont (419), Marion (422), Bonduel (428) and Gresham (441). Menominee Indian did not have a full team.

I-S and Pacelli finished first in the final team standings with 19 points, followed by W-B (14), Manawa (13, W-F (12), Amherst (11), Shiocton (8), Bonduel (6), Marion (5), Gresham (2) and Menominee Indian (1).

“The boys were excited for the opportunity to play,” Bauer said. “This was a time of nerves and tension and the boys handled it well, winning the playoff on the first hole.

“I am proud of how these young men stepped up and played during the tournament and especially how they handled themselves in the playoff,” he added. “We had a good crowd of people for the playoff and the boys stepped up on the first tee and hit some great shots.”

Zach Mortenson led the T-Birds with a 79, followed by Jon Bauer (88), Chase Przybylski (91), Ryan Melum (107) and Cody Breitzke (109).

Team scores for Manawa were Ryan Schuelke (87), David Blum (93), Alex Kowaleski (96), Matt Radloff (99) and Scott Schuelke (109).

Team scores for Weyauwega-Fremont were Taylor Berndt (94), Alex Hulbert (98), Trevor Flease (113), Noah Buhrow (114) and Ryan Ebert (135).

“Great job by Taylor Berndt with his low round of 94,” W-F coach Melinda Brace said. “I am extremely proud of the hard work that everyone on the team put in this season. We didn’t achieve our goal, but great improvements were made toward meeting that conference champion goal for next year. We are working hard toward individual players advancing to sectionals by scoring low in regionals.”

Regional play began May 26 for teams in three divisions. I-S, W-F and Manawa competed in the Division 3 Assumption Regional at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Teams and individuals that qualify for sectional play will then head to the Wabeno/Laona Sectional, set for Tuesday, June 2, at McCauslin Brook Golf & Country Club in Lakewood.

• The CWC also named its all-conference team following the meet.

Golfers making the first team are Mortenson, Ryan Schuelke, Shiocton’s Max Beecher, Gresham’s Killian Eggert and Pacelli’s Jacob Shulfer.

The second team consists of Bauer; Hulbert; Marion’s Jared Sawall; and Pacelli’s Zach Williams and Carson Kedrowski.
