Waupaca girls’ team to play six games before school starts

By the time students return to school Sept. 1, the Waupaca girls’ golf team will already have six of its 11 matches under its belt.

Waupaca, under second-year coach Kellsey Welter, opened the season Aug. 14 at the Thunder Invitational near Seymour and hosted Appleton West, Bonduel, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Notre Dame, Oconto, Wrightstown and Xavier at the Waupaca Invitational Aug. 18 at the Waupaca Country Club.

That’s one of only two home meets this year for the Comets. Waupaca will also host a North Eastern Conference match Monday, Aug. 31.

Other teams in the North Eastern Conference are FVL, Freedom, Little Chute, West De Pere, Wrightstown and Denmark.

The Comets placed 16th at the Thunder Invitational, held at Crystal Springs Golf Course. Team scores were FVL (350), Hortonville (362), De Pere (367), Green Bay Preble (375), Marinette (377), Pulaski (400), Wrightstown (404), Kimberly (422), West De Pere (424), Seymour (426), Ashwaubenon (427), Freedom (429), Appleton East (442), Shawano (458), Bay Port (479) and Waupaca (495).

Markie Ash led Waupaca with an 18-hole score of 95, followed by Alana Radley and Sydni Sondrol (129); and Anna Ryder (142).
