Iola-Scandinavia leaves opponents scoreless

By Holly Neumann

The Iola-Scandinavia football team traveled to Rosholt for a Friday, Aug. 28, non-conference match-up .

The Thunderbirds returned home with a 65-0 win against the Hornets.

The T-Birds took an early lead in the game when Cam Gruenwald ran the ball into the end-zone for the first scoring of the game. Kyle Jobke kicked the extra point giving I-S a 7-0 lead.

Rosholt was not able to do much with the ball on their possession and was forced to kick the ball away.

Kristian Welch later ran the ball into the end-zone on a 77 yard run, followed by Gruenwald on the 2-point conversion, putting the T-birds up 15-0.

Gruenwald once again found the end-zone in the second quarter and Welch ran in the 2-point conversion to widen the gap in the score to 23-0.

Rosholt was unable to move the ball on their next possession and once again had to kick the ball away.

With I-S on the 47 yard line, Welch fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Colton Bembeneck, giving Rosholt a second chance, only to turn the ball over to the Thunderbirds once again.

The ball went back and forth on possession as I-S QB Gruenwald and then Rosholt QB Dylan Richter each threw an interception.

The half ended when Gruenwald ran the ball in with 26 seconds left in the half, followed by Jobke’s PAT.

Welch opened up the scoring in the second half on a 60 yard run into the endzone. Jobke once again kicked the point after touchdown putting I-S up 44-0.

Rosholt later fumbled on third and 19, giving the ball to the T-Birds on Rosholts 27 yard line.

Welch and Jobke combined on another scoring drive to bring the score to 51-0.

Freshman Bryce Huettner added to the scoring with a 1:25 left in the third quarter, putting the T-Birds up 57-0.

Iola-Scandinavia was able to find the end-zone one last time, giving the T-Birds a 65-0 win over the Hornets.

The T-Birds will travel to Amherst on Sept. 4 to take on the Falcons, while Rosholt will travel to Tigerton to take on the Thundercatz.
