Inexperienced Waupaca team continues to improve

By Greg Seubert

Waupaca’s volleyball team opened the season with a quadrangular in Amherst and a invitational in New London.

Amherst quadrangular
AMHERST – The Comets headed to Amherst Aug. 27 and fell to Amherst 25-17, 23-25, 21-25; beat Almond 25-22, 25-16; and fell to Rosholt 20-25, 21-25.

New London Invitational
NEW LONDON – Waupaca opened the tournament Aug. 25 with 25-22 and 25-20 wins over Green Bay East.

The Comets then fell to Weyauwega-Fremont 21-15, 15-25; Manawa 18-25, 22-25; and New London 26-24, 21-25, 10-15.

“We have a very inexperienced team this year, but it was good to see them get a win right away,” coach Chelsea Benitz said. “We also played a good New London team tough and continued to improve throughout the night.

“Brenna Oleson was very consistent, Avrey Simonson did a nice job stepping in as middle, as Taylor Vaughn sprained her ankle early in the night,” she said. “We have a long way to go, but tonight was a step in the right direction.”

The Comets will open North Eastern Conference play at 7:30 Thursday, Sept. 3, at Luxemburg-Casco. The home opener against Oconto Falls is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10.
