By Greg Seubert

Iola-Scandinavia High School wasn’t able to field full cross country teams for the Smiley Invitational, but the Thunderbirds still returned home from Wausau Sept. 19 with a pair of top-10 efforts, including a first-place finisher.

Erika Kisting won the Divisions 2/3 girls’ race in 19:53 at Tribute Golf Course, while teammate Leighten Fischer finished sixth in 20:46.

The T-Bird girls only had four runners in the girls’ race and one competitor in the boys’ race, so they didn’t figure in the final team scores.

Jada Beacom and Natalie Rustad placed 20th and 57th in 22:10 and 24:19, respectively, in the girls’ race, while Erick Kriewaldt turned in a time of 20:13 to place 46th in the boys’ race.

Boscobel swept the boys’ and girls’ team championships.

In another race featuring area teams Sept. 19, Weyauwega-Fremont and Manawa competed in the Bulldog Invitational at New London’s Hatten Park.

The Manawa and W-F boys placed 10th and 11, respectively, while the W-F girls placed ninth. Manawa did not field a full girls’ team.

Placing for the Manawa boys were Andrew Scheller (40th, 19:31); Jared Zielke (53rd, 19:58); Johnathon Lubahn (72nd, 21:42); Scott Schneider (77th, 24:05); and Devin Loughrin (82nd, 25:42).

Placing for the W-F boys were Duane Brazil (42nd, 19:38); Andy Schroeder (59th, 20:53); Glenn Walborn (78th, 24:13); Logan Feltz (79th, 24:40); and Chris Strehlow (81st, 25:40).

Caragan Volz led the W-F girls by placing ninth in 21:26. Also placing for the Indians were Daisy Wilson (27th, 22:35); Marlen Leyva (44th, 23:35); Saylor Alberts (63rd, 24:23); and Natalie Schneider (71st, 24:59).

Placing for the Manawa girls were Jody Wentworth (81st, 26:18); Lexi Smiles (85th, 27:16); Briana Severson (86th, 27:46).
