Waupaca snaps three-game losing streak
By Greg Seubert
It probably took a little longer than normal, but the Waupaca Comets have punched their ticket for the WIAA playoffs.
The Comets made the playoffs for the 25th straight year Oct. 2 with a 46-6 Bay Conference win over Shawano at Haberkorn Field.
Not only did Waupaca end a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-3 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, the Comets also scored on their first five possessions and outgained the Hawks 504-262.
Quarterback Walker Smith ran for four touchdowns while Christian Overman gained 232 yards on 17 carries and also found the end zone on a 53-yard run in the first half.
Smith capped the game’s opening drive with a 1-yard run. Overman’s 53-yarder made it 14-0 later in the first quarter and Smith threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jason Ellie and scored on runs of 3 and 30 yards before halftime.
Smith scored his fourth TD of the game on a 7-yard run in the third quarter and backup quarterback Alex Ronaldson wrapped up the scoring with a 23-yard pass to Noah Hansen.
Shawano scored on Kien Moorman’s 5-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
Waupaca will wrap up the regular season with a pair of road games at Seymour Friday, Oct. 9, and at Menasha Friday, Oct. 16. Kickoff for both games is set for 7 p.m.
