Anglers key in on smallmouth

Wolf River Bass Club hosts fall open

By John Faucher

Nearly a dozen different Central Wisconsin bass clubs host end-of-the-year tournaments on the Wolf River, however, few are as widely attended as the Wolf River Bass Club’s annual fall open.

This year’s open took place at Riverside Park in New London on Oct. 10.

Forty-two anglers fished in blustery conditions during the eight hour tournament.

Anglers were met with warmer than usual water temperatures, following the warmest September in history.

Out of 21 two-person teams only three did not weight in fish.

Each team could register six fish for a total weight before releasing them back to the river.

Most teams brought in smallmouth bass. Only one team brought in a limit of largemouth bass.

Top five teams
Josh Muskevitsch of Hortonville, and Geoff Williams of Weyauwega, brought in the winning catch. They weighed in six smallmouth totaling 20.54 pounds.

Levi and Seth Warner of Shiocton took second place with six fish totaling 18.38 pounds.

Art and Joe Sukowatey of Winneconne won third place with six smallmouth totaling 17.71 pounds.

Jeremy Muskevitsch and Rick Rieckmann of New London were the only team weighing in a limit of largemouth bass for a total weight of 17.19 pounds and fourth place overall.

Matt Nelson and Ty Lathrop of New London finished in fifth place with six fish totaling 16.66 pounds. Nelson earned the title of Big Bass winner with his 4.46 pound smallmouth bass.
