Comets eliminated from playoffs

Waupaca shut out in second half

An upset wasn’t in the cards for the Waupaca Comets in the opening round of the WIAA state football playoffs.

Rice Lake outscored the Comets 12-0 in the second half Oct. 23 and went on to a 26-10 win in a Division 3 Level 1 matchup at Pug Lund Field in Rice Lake.

The Comets scored all of their points on Walker Smith’s 3-yard run in the first quarter and Hayden Neidert’s 44-yard field goal at the end of the first half.

The Warriors, last year’s state runner-up in Division 3, outgained the Comets 402-208 and had a pair of 100-yard rushers in Alain Pierre (138 yards) and Isaiah Secrest (124).

Christian Overman led Waupaca with 80 yards on 17 carries.

Waupaca ended its season at 4-6.

In other Level 1 games involving area teams, Menasha defeated Hortonville 38-15 in Division 2; Amherst beat New Holstein 49-12 in Division 5; Iola-Scandinavia topped Crivitz 35-7 in Division 6; Almond-Bancroft shut out Port Edwards 42-0 in Division 7; and Highland handed Wild Rose a 28-26 defeat in Division 7.

Level 2 matchups for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, include fourth-seeded Winnebago Lutheran at No. 1 Amherst in Division 5; No. 3 St. Mary’s Springs at No. 2 Iola-Scandinavia in Division 6; and No. 5 Athens at No. 1 Almond-Bancroft in Division 7.
