T-Birds beat Wolverines

Iola-Scandy rushes to its first playoff win

The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds defeated the Crivitz Wolverines 35-7 in the first round of Division 6 playoffs, in a Friday night matchup at Thunderbird Field.

Neither team was able to get on the board during the first quarter of the game.

During the second quarter of play the T-Birds outscored the Wolverines 14-0.

Quarterback Cam Gruenwald was the first to find the end zone, with Kyle Jobke running in the extra 2 points.

Kristian Welch followed suit with 43.5 seconds left on the clock and ran the ball in for the second score of the game. With the extra point failing the T-Birds took a 14-0 lead, to close out the scoring in the first half of play.

The T-Birds extended their lead in the third quarter when Gruenwald once again made his way into the end-zone. Jobke was able to kick the extra point, giving Iola-Scandinavia a 21-0 lead.

With time running out in the third quarter Welch and Jobke combined for another score, putting the T-Birds up 28-0.

The Thunderbirds continued their scoring drive into the fourth quarter of the game when Gruenwald connected with Austin Dyb who ran it in for another touchdown. Jobke once again kicked the extra point widening the gap to 35-0.

Tyler Slaby got the only score of the game for the Wolverines, late in the fourth quarter. Sebastian Atwood kicked the extra point, closing out the scoring for the game at 35-7.

The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds will advance to round two of the play-off on Friday, Oct. 30 and will host St Mary’s Spring’s in a 7 p.m. game at Thunderbird Field.
