Horse sexually assaulted in Waupaca County

A rural New London man reported that his 5-year-old pregnant mare was sexually assaulted over the weekend.

Investigators with the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office have questioned a man with a history of sexually assaulting horses, but nobody has been taken into custody yet.

“Horse owners should be vigilant about keeping watch over their horses and should notify their local law enforcement agency if they see something suspicious,” Sheriff Brad Hardel said.

The owner of the molested horse told investigators that he noticed that his horses were acting as if they had been spooked, so he went out to the pasture to inspect them. He found the mare injured and bleeding.

A veterinarian, who was called to treat the injured horse, determined the mare had been sexually assaulted.

The mare and foal are expected to survive.

The owner of the horse believes she was maliciously attacked either Saturday night or early Sunday morning, Nov. 28-29.

The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or strange vehicles parked in the area of Crain Road, one-half mile east of County Trunk T, in the town of Lebanon, to call 715-258-4466.
