Domestic violence charges filed

An alleged heroin addict is accused of threatening his wife with a knife.

Jacob J. Sadowski, 24, Waupaca, is charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, battery and disorderly conduct as acts of domestic violence.

On the night of Sunday, Dec. 13, Waupaca Police Officer Brent Krueger was dispatched to the 600 block of Mill Street in response to a domestic complaint involving a knife.

“I responded to the location with other officers,” Krueger reported. “I requested an ambulance on standby and advised responding officers of the presence of several children in the residence.”

Sadowski’s mother answered the door. Krueger told her he was responding to a complaint involving a knife and he was concerned somebody may have been stabbed.

According to the criminal complaint, Sadowski’s mother denied that anybody had been stabbed and said only her grandchildren, her daughter and her boyfriend were in the house. She also said she would not allow police into the house without a warrant.

Sgt. John Helgeson arrived and told her the officers would be entering the house as community caretakers to make sure there was nobody there who needed help.

“Once inside I observed the four children who ranged in age from infant to 8 years old were in the living room and appeared to be OK,” Krueger reported.

The wife was seen attempting to leave the house. Police say she appeared visibly upset, but did not want to cooperate with the investigation. She had a 3-inch gash in her hand.

Krueger found Sadowski in an upstairs bedroom and escorted him outside to a squad car.

The wife told police Sadowski had been sick all day as he is withdrawing from heroin, the complaint says. She reportedly said Sadowski had been stealing from her to buy drugs.

Sadowski allegedly stole $20 from her pants pocket while she was showering. She told police that when she confronted him about it, Sadowski threatened to kill himself with a knife, the complaint says. She said she cut her hand while attempting to take the knife away.

Police found a knife under a pillow in the woman’s bedroom.

The woman’s parents, who live in Manitowoc and called Waupaca police, said their daughter called them earlier that day. They reported that she was hysterical and asked her mother to take care of her children if anything happened to her because she believed Sadowski was going to kill her.

The woman’s parents also reported that she called her parents again shortly before 11 p.m. and said, “He tried to cut my throat.”

Sadowski remains in custody on a $5,000 cash bond with the condition that he have no contact with his wife.
