Zuhse, Peggie I.

Peggie I. Zuhse, age 87 of Clintonville, passed away Saturday evening, January 2, 2016. She died at home with family at her side and was supported by Theda Care at Home Hospice for the last two weeks of her life.

Peggie was born on May 21, 1928 in Ipswich, England. She was raised in Ipswich and met Melvin Zuhse of Clintonville while he was in England serving in the United States Army Air Corps. Peggie became a “war bride” as the couple were united in marriage on January 20, 1945 in Ipswich. Upon Melvin’s discharge, they settled in Clintonville where they were members of St. Martin Lutheran Church. Peggie was baptized at St. Martin and was once an active member of the Ladies Aid. Peggie’s sole mission in life was to provide a nurturing home for her family. As her children grew older, she worked at various places in the Clintonville area including Arnold’s Bakery, Donaldson’s Cleaners, and as a chef at Marson Motel (later the Landmark Motel), and the Riverside Golf Course Restaurant. Peggie excelled at creating meals in her kitchens, either for 12 or 120 people. Everyone had their favorite Peggie recipe. She was proud of her birth country and loved all things British, especially her English tea. She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, and spending time in her gardens. Known as “Nana” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she always kept Nana’s cookie jar full and accessible. To Peggie, family was her greatest joy.

Survivors include: her children: Dale (Joan) Zuhse, Oregon, WI; Barbara Anne (Jim) Merholtz, Clintonville; Linda (Vernon) Tullberg, Rapid City, SD; Pamela (Butch) Hesse, Clintonville; Brian (Sarah) Zuhse, Frederick, MD; Cynthia (Doug) Carrick, Clintonville; Gloria (Gary) Sipiorski, Clintonville; Scott Zuhse, Las Vegas, NV; Lisa (Dan) Opperman, Oshkosh; and Mark Zuhse, Aurora, CO. There are 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; sisters, brothers, and cousins back in England; and a brother-in-law, Philip (Carolyn) Zuhse, Shawano. She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin Zuhse on February 4, 2000.
