Smith stops 50 shots for Comets

By Greg Seubert

Mosinee handed Waupaca a 3-2 loss Jan. 8 in a matchup of Great Northern Conference boys’ hockey teams at the Community Parks Hockey Classic in Stevens Point.

Waupaca got on the board first, as Jack Menzies scored an unassisted goal with 4:03 remaining in the first period.

The Indians tied the game with 25 seconds left in the second period, as Bryce Rheinschmidt found the net with Landon Stepan getting the assist.

Waupaca regained the lead on Cody Ramussen’s goal with 11:43 to go in the game, with Drake Hiddemen getting credit for the assist.

However, Mosinee responded with two goals in less than five minutes. Zeth Pyan tied the game with 11:16 remaining in the contest and Tanner Lindell broke the tie with 6:56 to go off of assists from Dylan Bednar and Michael Alfonso.

Mosinee outshot Waupaca 53-19 in the game. Goalie Walker Smith stopped 50 shots for Waupaca, while Zach Bednar finished with 17 saves.

Waupaca will face Stevens Point or Appleton United at 5 p.m. or 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, in the consolation game of the four-team tournament at the K.B. Willett Ice Arena.
