Comets win with late goal

Waupaca boys’ hockey team defeats Lakeland

By Greg Seubert

The right place at the wrong time.

That’s where Waupaca boys’ hockey coach Dave Crisman found himself Jan. 16 during his team’s Great Northern Conference matchup with Lakeland.

Crisman was watching the action from the Waupaca bench in the first period and was hit on the side of the head with the puck. He received medical treatment and was back on the bench for the second period to watch the Comets hand the Thunderbirds a 2-1 loss.

Hunter Smith gave Waupaca a 1-0 lead in the second period on a power play goal, with the assist going to Jack Menzies and Elliot Crisman.

Lakeland tied the game in the third period on Wesley Bauer’s goal that came off on assist from Buddy Duranso, but Waupaca broke the tie with 1:38 to go in the gamae, as Crisman scored a power play goal with Elias Thompson and Menzies getting credit for the assist.

Waupaca outshot the Thunderbirds 36-24. The Thunderbirds also had seven penalties in the game, including three five-minute majors.

Waupaca will host Tomahawk at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, before traveling to Oshkosh Saturday, Jan. 23, to face Oshkosh United.
