Waupaca Area falls in overtime

By Greg Seubert

An up-and-down season ended on a down note for the Waupaca Area girls’ hockey team.

Markie Ash won a faceoff in front of Waupaca Area’s goal less than a minute into overtime, but the puck got by goalie Cassie Rasmussen to give Stevens Point/Wisconsin Rapids/Marshfield a 3-2 win Feb. 18 in a WIAA state tournament game at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.

Waupaca trailed 2-1 late in the game, but Ash scored a power-play goal with 3:49 left in regulation off of an assist from Katarina Otter-Giese to knot the score at 2-2. Ash had given Waupaca Area a 1-0 lead with 3:51 remaining in the second period with an unassisted goal.

The Red Panthers tied the game with 56 seconds to go in the second period on Kaylee Bruneau’s power-play goal and took the lead with 5:45 left in the third period on a goal from Bryar Brooks.

The Red Panthers’ Carolyn Storch got credit for the game-winning goal.

Point/Rapids/Marshfield outshot Waupaca Area 21-9. Waupaca Area finished the season with an 11-14 record.
