Amherst handed Iola-Scandinavia a 45-29 defeat March 5 in a WIAA Division 4 boys’ basketball regional final at Amherst High School.

The Thunderbirds led by as many as seven points in the first half, but a 12-2 run gave Amherst an 18-15 run at the break.

Zach Mortenson scored the T-Birds’ first nine points of the second half and his three-pointer gave I-S a 22-21 lead. Amherst then scored the game’s next 16 points to take a 39-24 lead.

Mortenson led all scorers with 13 points. Tyler Biadasz had 12 to lead Amherst.

The third-seeded Falcons will take on No. 2 Algoma at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at Green Bay Southwest. The Falcons improved to 23-1, while I-S ended its season at 17-8.
