T-Birds have state track experience

Steingraber takes over as team’s coach

By Greg Seubert

First-year Iola-Scandinavia track coach Angela Steingraber has several experienced athletes back this season, including five that competed at last year’s WIAA State Track & Field Meet.

“We have a fair amount of returning talent and competitors that competed at state last year in Kristian Welch, Gio Fredheim, Leighten Fischer, Brynn Rasmussen and Erika Kisting,” said Steingraber, an assistant coach last season.

Welch is a senior, Fredheim, Fischer and Rasmussen are juniors and Kisting is a sophomore. The roster also includes seniors Karl Boddy, Hunter Frye, Kali Finch and Micaela Jobke; junior Scott VonGunten; and sophomores Jalen Block, Natalie Rustad, Mackenzie Frye and Joe Makovek.

Kisting placed second in the girls’ Division 3 1,600-meter run at state last year; Welch placed third in the boys’ long jump and 100-meter dash and joined Fredheim on the boys’ 1,600-meter relay team that placed third; and Kisting, Fischer and Rasmussen were part of the girls’ 3,200-meter relay team that placed seventh.

“We also have a slew of upcoming talent in our freshmen class in Payton Wester, Makenna Brown, Haley Ullom, Magan Ellioff, Jada Beacom, Kyle Beske, Tyler Bricco, Garrett Brown, Jordan Fuhs, Jack Kraemer, Gavin McClellan, Austin Buss and Keygan Singh,” Steingraber said.

Asherrie Opperman and Scott Erickson are on board as assistant coaches this season.

“The athletes and coaching staff are excited about the upcoming competitions,” she said. “It is always exciting to see the athletes set goals and smash them over the course of the season.”

The Thunderbirds opened the season with separate indoor meets March 18-19 for boys and girls at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The team will return to Stevens Point for another indoor meet Thursday, March 31.

“We are signed up for three indoor meets this year, which is a great way to prepare ourselves for the outdoor season and find a place for all of the talent on our team,” Steingraber said.

The team’s only home meet this seasons are a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference preconference meet Monday, April 18, and the Iola-Scandinavia Invitational Monday, April 25.

“We are looking forward to seeing the success of the incoming freshmen class and the returning talent of our sophomores, juniors and seniors,” Steingraber said. “We are confident that we will have success in a variety of events throughout the year.”
