Comets hope to find some offense

Soccer team has new conference

By Greg Seubert

Scoring goals could be a problem this season for the Waupaca girls’ soccer team.

However, a solid goalie should help the Comets compete in the new North Eastern Conference.

Taylor Korth, a second-team all-conference goalie last year as a junior, is one of eight seniors on this year’s team that opened the season April 1 with a 3-0 loss at New London.

“We’re really fortunate to have Taylor back in goal,” coach Mark Polebitski said. “She is one of the best goalies in the area and I know she’s going to keep us in games.”

Korth is one of three senior captains, along with Nikky Weise and Kayla Pennebecker.

“We have a good core of senior leaders coming back this year and they showed a lot of leadership already in the first week,” Polebitski said. “The girls really look up to our three captains.”

Polebitski has 38 players split between varsity and junior varsity teams.

The Comets have to replace all-conference players Alyssa Nicewander and Maleva Butkiewicz.

“We’re probably missing a forward,” Polebitski said. “We’re really going to have to score by using a group effort. We don’t have that one breakaway forward with lightning speed like we’ve had in the past. It’s going to take a lot of communication and passing to move that ball close to the goal. Even though we have a lot of our defenders back, we’re going to move some of them up the midfield.”

Former goalie Cassie Glodowski is now Waupaca High School’s athletic trainer and has been working with her former team.

“We’ve spent a lot of time on conditioning and really worked on some speed and agility training,” Polebitski said. “We have a pretty good set of athletes out here, so I think the speed and agility’s really going to help them.”

The North Eastern Conference also includes Clintonville, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Luxemburg-Casco, Marinette and Wrightstown.

“Strength-wise, it’s about the same as it was last year, except for Xavier, which was really a different kind of team,” Polebitski said. “We’re going to do all right. I’m not certain where we’re going to end up, but I would expect somewhere in the middle or the top half if we can pull some things together.

“I think FVL is definitely going to be the favorite this year and a close second would be Wrightstown,” he added. “It’ll be a good conference. I’m looking forward to it.”
