Peterson, Walter

Peterson, WalterWalter Albert Peterson, 87, of Amherst, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Theda Care Hospice Center, Waupaca, Wisconsin.

Walter was born on the home farm in the Township of Lanark, Wisconsin on May 22, 1928, son of the late Charles and Amelia (Sandau) Peterson. He married Irene Kussman on June 15, 1957 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Am-herst. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2000 after 43 years of blissful marriage. Walter was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He worked the family farm for 76 years and managed the operation to the end. For a few years (after high school) he also drove a milk truck. He was the treasurer for the Township of Lanark for 14 years. Walter and Irene raised seven children, four of whom continued dairy farming. He loved farming, attending auctions and traveling. Walter and his beloved wife (in retirement) traveled to Nova Scotia, Arizona, Florida, Alaska and everywhere in between. Walter and Irene wintered in Arizona, because it was warm and they “harvested hay year round.”

He is survived by six children: David (Lenore) Peterson of Scandinavia and their children: Melissa (fiancé Jordan) Richter, Rebecca, Jolene; Wayne (Julie) Peterson of Amherst and son, Adam Hoffmann; Roger (deceased) and his children: Christy (Chris) Gad-zinski, Michael (Crystal) Peterson and Heather (Greg) Dettmann; Gene (Caroline) Peterson of Amherst and their children, Christina and Cortnee; LTC Larry Peterson and his children: Blade, Hunter and Taya; twin daughters: Sharon (Tony) Kurszewski of Amherst and their children, Jonathan (Schultz) and Amelia; Karen (Roger) Wojtalewicz of Montello and their children: Calvin, Thomas, and Kenneth; three great-grandchildren: Adam, Emmalee and Elijah and sister-in-law, Dorothy Chich of Waupaca. He is also survived by nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene and son, Roger; three sisters: Ruth, Lucille and Fern; one brother, Harold; an infant brother; a nephew, John; mother and father-in-law, Karl and Martha Kussman; five brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst at 11:00 a.m. on Friday May 20th, with Reverend Donald Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday 4-7 p.m. at Voie Funeral Home in Iola and at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Friday from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Amherst.
