Golfers advance to state

T-Birds moving on as a team

By Greg Seubert

A familiar course turned out to be an advantage for Zach Mortenson and the rest of the Iola-Scandinavia boys’ golf team.

The Thunderbirds carded an 18-hole round of 369, good enough for a second-place finish May 31 at a WIAA Division 3 sectional meet. Amherst hosted the 12-team meet at Glacier Wood Golf Club, the T-Birds’ home course.

The T-Birds aren’t the only ones to qualify for the state meet, held June 6-7 at Madison’s University Ridge Golf Course. Manawa’s Ryan Schuelke and Amherst’s Robert Johannes placed second and fifth, overall, at Glacier Wood, while Waupaca’s Mason Gardner placed fifth May 31 at a Division 2 regional at Seymour’s Crystal Springs Golf Course.

Division 2
Gardner turned in a round of 80 and is heading to state for the first time. Waupaca advanced to the sectional as a team and tied for third.
Team scores were Xavier (316), Marinette (332), Luxemburg-Casco and Waupaca (349), Berlin and Winneconne (352), Freedom (355), Oconto (356), Roncalli (359), Shawano (363), Peshtigo (368) and Two Rivers (371).

Other scores for Waupaca were Isaac Wright (85), Noah Carrick (89), Logan Bunge (95) and Elliot Crisman (98).
