Golfers raise big bucks

$27,000 for military families in four years

By Scott Bellile

Golfers raised over $7,500 to benefit local veterans at the fourth annual Golfing for Veterans event this summer.

The money will go to Operation Homefront, which provides to military families financial assistance to pay for needs such as food, mortgage payments and home repairs. Four years of golf outings in New London have to date raised about $27,000 for the charity, according to AJ Griesbach, who organized the event with his wife Megan.

“We exceeded our fundraising estimates again, which is a testimony to the great people that attend and support the event,” AJ Griesbach said.

Thirty teams of four golfers participated in the golf scramble held at Shamrock Heights Golf Course in New London on June 25. There were also hole events, a skins game and a $10,000 hole-in-one challenge.

The team that won the scramble consisted of Will Bierowski, Rodney Cromwell, Jim Mohr and Phil Nelson. Each player on that team received free golf and cart passes to Lake Arrowhead as well as a dozen Titleist golf balls.

“Every year feels great but different,” AJ Griesbach said. “We’re always amazed and humbled by the support. We compare it to our wedding day: just a whirlwind of good emotions. This year was amazing. Having [8th Congressional District candidate and Marine veteran] Mike Gallagher there to say a few words was special.”
