Thunderbirds heading to Southern Door

By Greg Seubert

It won’t count in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference standings, but Iola-Scandinavia has a big game on its schedule.

The 4-0 Thunderbirds will face another undefeated team, the Southern Door Eagles, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, in Brussels.

The teams have plenty in common.

I-S is currently tied with Amherst for first place in the CWC-8 standings with a 2-0 record, while the Eagles and Oconto lead the Packerland Conference with a 2-0 mark.

The T-Birds have outscored their opponents 185-29 so far, while Southern Door has scored 148 points while holding its opponents to 33.

I-S quarterback Jayden Sivertson has completed 19 of 32 passes for 384 yards, while Southern Door’s Nick LeCaptain is 37 of 56 for 684 yards.

Bryce Huettner is the T-Birds’ leading rusher with 374 yards on 42 attempts. Southern Door’s Tory Jandrin has rushed the ball 47 times for 319 yards. Jon Bauer is the T-Birds’ leading receiver with six catches for 188 yards, while Derik LeCaptain has 16 receptions for 309 yards for Southern Door.

Both teams also saw their 2015 season end with a playoff loss to an eventual state champion. St. Mary’s Springs ended the T-Birds’ season with a 28-21 loss in a Division 6 Level 2 game, while Division 5 champion Amherst handed the Eagles a 48-27 loss in Level 3.
