Two strokes.

That’s what kept the Waupaca girls’ golf team from advancing to WIAA sectional play for the first time since 2006.

The Comets hosted a Division 1 regional meet Sept. 28 at Foxfire Golf Club in Waupaca and finished fifth out of eight teams with a score of 399. The top four teams – Hortonville, Green Bay Preble, De Pere and West De Pere – advanced to the Preble Sectional. Hortonville won the meet with a 366, while Preble (389), De Pere (397) and West De Pere (398) also advanced.

Although the season ended as a team for the Comets, junior Markie Ash’s season is alive and well, as she tied with Hortonville’s Bree Downie for the meet’s lowest round with an 83.

Ash is one of four individuals – along with Appleton North’s Sami Plankey, Appleton East’s Olivia Reichardt and Appleton West’s Shelby Hiltgen – to qualify for the Preble Sectional, scheduled for Monday, Oct. 3, at Royal Scot Golf Club near Green Bay.

Other scores for Waupaca included Anna Ryder (101); Alana Radley (102); and Sydney Behm and Cadie Ash (113).

Four Waupaca junior varsity golfers – Rainy Von Gunten, Caitlyn Kelly, Alyssa Townsend and Lylli Sondrol – were able to golf in the regional after Green Bay East brought only one golfer.
