Dunlavy takes over in Waupaca

Clintonville grad beats former team

By Greg Seubert

It was going to come sooner or later.

It just happened to come against her former team.

Clintonville High School graduate Kirbi Dunlavy, in her first season as coach of the Waupaca varsity volleyball team, picked up her first North Eastern Conference win Sept. 27 with a 25-18, 25-13, 25-19 win over the Truckers in Waupaca.

Although Dunlavy is in her first season as the Comets’ coach, she coached New London’s varsity team in 2014 and 2015. She is a physical education teacher at Waupaca Middle School.

“It was nice being at the middle school last year because I knew all the incoming freshman,” she said. “It’s been an easy transition. I got to work with them a couple days a week over the summer and we had a camp with the younger kids. We have five freshman on varsity, so it’s definitely an eye-opener for them.”

Coaching the Comets means getting used to a new conference that includes Clintonville, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Luxemburg-Casco, Marinette, Oconto Falls and Wrightstown.

“I know about Luxemburg-Casco because they were in the Bay Conference two years ago when I was at New London,” Dunlavy said. “Any game is going to be a challenge for us, but we’re ready to get after it and play our best against whoever’s on the other side of the net.”
