Comets, Thunder get defensive

Waupaca qualifies for WIAA playoffs

By Greg Seubert

Three points.

It wasn’t much, but that’s all it took for the Waupaca football team to keep its WIAA playoff streak alive.

Hayden Neidert’s 22-yard field goal in the final minute of the first quarter turned out to be the only points in a 3-0 Bay Conference win over Seymour at Haberkorn Field.

Not only did the Comets snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play, the win also guaranteed a spot in the playoffs for the 26th straight season, a streak that begin in 1991.

Defense turned out to be the name of the game, as Waupaca held the Thunder to 99 yards of offense. The Comets also struggled to move the ball and ended up with 95 rushing yards and another 113 through the air.

Waupaca will wrap up the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at home against Menasha. The Bluejays improved to 8-0 on the season and 7-0 in the Bay with a 42-21 win over West De Pere.

The WIAA playoffs get underway with Level 1 games Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22.
