Waupaca to host regional final

By Greg Seubert

A No. 1 seed is paying off for the Waupaca boys’ soccer team.

After having a bye in the first round of the WIAA state tournament, the Comets handed Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia/Rosholt a 9-0 defeat Oct. 20 in a Division 3 regional semifinal at Waupaca High School.

Waupaca will now host third-seeded Lakeland, a team that knocked the Comets out of the tournament last year, at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in a regional final. Lakeland advanced to the regional final Oct. 20 with a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded Shawano.

Luis Jorgensen and Seth Boldt combined to score seven of the Comets’ goals. Jorgensen scored Waupaca’s first two goals in the first 14:25 of the game and added two more in the first 4:22 of the second half, while Boldt found the net twice in the first half to help Waupaca take a 5-0 halftime lead.

Forrest Ziebell and Quentin Polebitski added solo goals in the first and second half, respectively.

The winner of the Waupaca/Lakeland game will face second-seeded Clintonville or No. 3 Mosinee Thursday, Oct. 27, in a sectional final, with the highest seed hosting.

The sectional final winner will then advance to a sectional final at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in Rice Lake.
