Indians fall to Gillett, New London

It’s been a rough ride so far for the Weyauwega-Fremont girls’ basketball team.

After dropping its opener 40-25 to Gillett Nov. 17, the Indians came out on the short end of a 72-28 score Nov. 21 against New London.

New London 72, W-F 28
The Indians didn’t have an answer for Leah Porath, who scored 20 of the Bulldogs’ 38 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 28.

New London led 38-15 at halftime and outscored the Indians 34-13 in the second half.

Taylor Folk and Kiley Akey scored eight points to lead the Indians, while Kate Christian and Meghan Besaw added nine each for New London.

Gillett 40, W-F 25
The Tigers led 15-10 at halftime before outscoring the home team 25-15 in the second half.

Krause led W-F with eight points, while Erin Balthazor and Taylor Yonker led Gillett with 15 and 12, respectively.

First-year coach Todd Breuer has only two players that saw a lot of playing time last season in Krause, a senior, and Akey, a junior. The rest of the roster includes sophomores Natalie Schneider, Daisy Wilson, Rylee Bartel, Morgan Monty and Tristian Paulson; and freshmen Folk, Julia Rice and Katie Bleck.

The Indians will open Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Bonduel before returning home to host Pacelli Friday, Dec. 2. Tipoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.
