Hablewitz named to all-tournament team

It was a chance for the Weyauwega-Fremont boys’ basketball team to pick up a win or two before returning to Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play.

Augusta and Loyal had other ideas, however.

The Indians dropped a 65-61 decision Dec. 30 to Augusta in the consolation game of the Auburndale Invitational one day after falling to eventual champion Loyal 74-32.

Augusta 65, W-F 61
The Indians didn’t have an answer for the Beavers’ Kayne Korger, who scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the first half.

A 9-1 run at the end of the first half helped the Indians take a 38-33 lead into the locker room, but Augusta outscored the Indians 32-23 in the second half.

Ryan Gruenwald’s three-pointer gave the Beavers a 47-45 lead early in the second half and the Indians never regained the lead again.

Jake Hablewitz and Logan Bosquez led the Indians with 19 and 17 points, respectively, while Augusta’s Carter Jacobs also finished in double figures with 18.

Hablewitz also joined Loyal’s Cameron Brussow and Riley Geiger and Auburndale’s Caleb Weinfurter and Collin Hawkins on the all-tournament team.

Loyal 74, W-F 32
Loyal outscored the Indians 43-17 in the first half and 31-15 in the second behind 23 points from Brussow.

Hablewitz led the Indians with 16 points.

The Indians will host Wautoma Tuesday, Jan. 3, and will resume CWC-8 play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Amherst.
