Clintonville girls struggle in loss

Truckers remain winless

By Erik Buchinger

The Clintonville girls’ basketball team was defeated 65-34 in a home game against Freedom, one of the top teams in the state, on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Clintonville dropped to 0-16 overall, including 0-13 in the North Eastern Conference, while Freedom improved to 15-2 and 12-1 in the conference. The Irish came into the game ranked No. 6 in WIAA Division III.

Nine players scored for the Truckers, and junior Melany Lorge led Clintonville with seven points.

“We went through a period where we had a hard time putting the ball through the hoop, and the game got away from us,” Clintonville head coach Nick Yaeger said.

Clintonville senior Nicole Seefeldt and freshman Abby King each scored six points in the loss.

Freedom’s Makenna Haase scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the victory. Taylor Haase scored seven points with nine rebounds, and Jada Helms added 12 points.

Clintonville was out-rebounded 31-14.

“We knew that if we wanted to compete against an extremely talented Freedom team that we had to play very hard, and I’m not sure we did,” Yaeger said. “We looked a little flat for most of the game. Our defense and blocking out needed to be better.”

The Truckers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7:15 p.m. against Wrightstown on the road.
