Apartment tenants evacuated

Waupaca firefighters were called out to a burning building at 855 Smith St. Friday, April 7.

When firefighters arrived at 9:07 p.m., they found the rear of a six-unit apartment building in flames with heavy smoke pouring out of the entire structure.

The fire was reported after a tenant noticed an orange glow on the building’s rear deck and realized it was a fire.

He and his family exited the building, notified the other tenants and called 911.

One apartment suffered extensive fire and water damage. The remaining apartments had smoke and water damage.

The fire started on the building’s exterior and its cause remains undetermined.

No injuries were reported.

Property losses were estimated at about $262,000.

Weyawuega, Scandinavia and Saxeville fire departments assisted at the scene.

Red Cross volunteers provided aid to the tenants.
