New London all-conference awards

31 Bulldogs make All-Bay

By Erik Buchinger

The New London spring sports season featured 31 All-Bay Conference athletes.

The Bulldogs had eight First Team selections with nine Second Team players and 12 Honorable Mentions.

Baseball

Will Wohlt (11, First Team All-Bay): “Will is a talented young man who loves the game of baseball, so it is really nice when a kid like Will can have the success he had this season. His conference stats speak for themselves: .436 batting average, and as a pitcher, he pitched 42 2/3 innings and struck out 54 and only walked nine. His 1.15 ERA led the conference pitchers. Will is also passionate about the success of the team, and I thought he did a great job as one of our leaders throughout the season. Will was certainly deserving of all the awards that he received this spring.”

-New London baseball head coach Tom Frederick

Kyle Wolf (11, First Team All-Bay): “This is the second year in a row that Kyle was voted to the First Team All-Bay Conference for baseball. Kyle was one of the top hitters of all the infielders in the conference, hitting .383 with an on-base percentage of .448. He only struck out twice in 60 at-bats. I thought that he had a great year as the leader of our infield. His glove work on tough hops was outstanding. He has worked hard to become a very good shortstop for us. I thought that Kyle was very deserving of his selection on the First Team.”

-New London baseball head coach Tom Frederick

Logan Locy (10, Second Team All-Bay): “Logan helped the team in many ways this season. Although he was nominated as an outfielder, he also had three wins and two saves as a pitcher with a 1.75 ERA. As a hitter, Logan batted .286 and had eight stolen bases. He had 13 stolen bases for the entire season. He is a very good outfielder with great speed and an outstanding arm. Logan is a great baseball kid who really loves the game. He certainly has a bright future in baseball ahead of him.”

-New London baseball head coach Tom Frederick

Austin Hanson (12, Honorable Mention All-Bay): “Austin started for us at first base as a sophomore and was a steady force for us at that position for the past three years. He had always been solid on ground balls and making good throws to the bases, but this spring he really worked hard to become better on picking low throws. In 171 chances this spring, he only had four errors. Austin is also a very serious kid about his hitting, and we certainly will miss his presence in the middle of our batting order. Austin hit .283 in conference games and was .325 overall. He also served as one of our captains this spring. We will miss his leadership next season.”

-New London baseball head coach Tom Frederick

Jake Hoier (11, Honorable Mention All-Bay): “It is tough to make First or Second Team All-Conference in the Bay because only two pitchers make each team, and the conference has several good pitchers. Jake certainly pitched well enough to make First or Second Team All-Conference. He was the winning pitcher in our first win over West De Pere in several years. He also had a complete game shutout over Seymour.  Jake’s ERA was 1.56 in conference and 1.29 overall. Jake is a quiet kid, but when he gets on the mound, he is a great competitor. I am looking forward to seeing Jake pitch during his senior year.”

-New London baseball head coach Tom Frederick

Softball

Leah Porath (12, First Team All-Bay): “Leah has been a four-year starter, part of two conference championships and participated in four state tournaments bringing home a silver ball in 2014. Leah was a unanimous First Team All-Conference pitcher and Player of Year for the Bay Conference. She participated in the Senior All-Star Game along with being selected as an All-District and Honorable Mention All-State pitcher. This year, Leah had a .488 batting average with eight home runs, 38 RBIs, eight doubles and one triple. Leah has 125 RBIs, 22 home runs, 21 doubles and four triples during her four years on the varsity team. Last year, Leah was a Second Team All-State outfielder. The last two years, Leah was team captain, and team Offensive Player of the Year and this year’s team MVP. Leah is very versatile playing every position at sometime except shortstop.”

-New London softball head coach Tony Porath

Kate Christian (10, First Team All-Bay): “Kate was our starting centerfielder this year and earned First Team All-Conference for the Bulldogs. Kate was a part of a conference championship and participated in the state tournament. Kate had a .301 batting average with four doubles and 17 RBIs. Kate was also team Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Kate had some unbelievable catches throughout the season.”

-New London softball head coach Tony Porath

McCoy Mix (12, First Team All-Bay): “McCoy has been a four-year starter and part of two conference championships and participated in four state tournaments bringing home a silver ball in 2014. McCoy earned First Team All-Conference for the Bulldogs and has played third base all four years and was voted team Defensive Player of the Year the last two years. McCoy ended this year with one home run, four doubles and one triple with a .284 batting average. She has three career triples, 19 doubles and three home runs over her four years with 77 RBIs.”

-New London softball head coach Tony Porath

Faith Carothers (11, Second Team All-Bay): “Faith has been a two-year starter for us and has been part of two conference championships and participated in two state tournaments. Faith had a .301 batting average with 25 RBIs, two home runs, nine doubles and one triple. Faith was a Second Team All-Conference outfielder for the Bulldogs.”

-New London softball head coach Tony Porath

Erin O’Connell (11, Second Team All-Bay): “Erin has been a two-year starter at first base for the Bulldogs. Erin has been part of two conference championships and participated in two state tournaments. Erin ended the season with a .258 batting average along with two triples, nine doubles, two home runs and 49 RBIs. Erin was team captain this year for the Bulldogs and was Second Team All-Conference.”

-New London softball head coach Tony Porath

Maddie Ruckdashel (12, Second Team All-Bay): “Maddie has been a three-year starter and part of two conference championships and participated in four state tournaments bringing home a silver ball in 2014. Maddie earned Second Team All-Conference for the Bulldogs and played catcher and was Co-Defensive Player of the Year and served as a team captain. Maddie had a .263 batting average with two doubles and one home run this year. She had a career eight doubles, two home runs and 46 RBIs. Maddie also participated in the Senior All-Star Game this year.”

-New London softball head coach Tony Porath

Lauren Winkler (9, Honorable Mention All-Bay): “Lauren was our starting shortstop this year and earned Honorable Mention All-Conference for the Bulldogs. Lauren was a part of a conference championship and participated in the state tournament this year. Lauren ended with a .368 batting average, 12 RBIs, four doubles and three triples.”

-New London softball head coach Tony Porath

Girls Soccer

Shania Krake (11, Second Team All-Bay): “Shania played well in our conference games. When there was a player to mark, she would be the one that I put on them. She is a tenacious and quick player, and her team counted on her to play that way. She was voted Best Offensive Player by her teammates.”

-New London girls soccer head coach Joe Messina

Liz Tank (12, Honorable Mention All-Bay): “Liz was one of the three team captains. She really made some great saves and kept us in a lot of games. She has improved immensely going to the ground and blocking breakaways and low shots.”

-New London girls soccer head coach Joe Messina

Kristen Evers (12, Honorable Mention All-Bay): “Kristen was one of our team captains and leaders on and off the field. The thing that stands out about Kristen is that I could put her anywhere on the field, and her work rate stayed the same. I could always count on her to show up and play 100 percent. Kristen was also voted MVP by her teammates.”

-New London girls soccer head coach Joe Messina

Track & Field

Megan Thurk (12, First Team All-Bay – Shot Put): “Megan was a first-time track athlete this year, who has a background in swim and a great work ethic. She came to practice ready to work and became a natural in the throws. Coach Marsh spent a considerable amount of time analyzing her technique and breaking down problem areas so she could fully reach her potential and compete to win in this event.”

-New London track and field co-head coach Amber Yerkey

Mackenzie Monty (10, First Team All-Bay – Discus, Third Team All-Bay – Shot Put): “Mackenzie is a very talented young thrower who had to overcome an injury sustained during rock climbing, so she wasn’t able to throw early in the season. Coach Marsh did a great job preparing her for her events once she was healthy, and she had a great season. We are very excited to see her performance over the next two years as she has the potential to be a state contender.”

-New London track and field co-head coach Amber Yerkey

Brayden Kurth (11, Second Team All-Bay – Long Jump, Third Team All-Bay – High Jump): “Brayden is an exceptionally talented athlete across multiple sports. We are very happy he joined us in track this year as he has a great work ethic, determination and skill that made him successful not only in jumping events but in running events as well, particularly the 200 meter. He has a great attitude and is tough as nails fighting through some painful quad injuries towards the end of this year’s season. We are eager to see what he will do next year as he comes back even stronger as a senior.”

-New London track and field co-head coach Amber Yerkey

Shane Borree (12, Second Team All-Bay – Triple Jump): “Shane is a classic example of hard work and building on previous seasons. His progression through the years has been a joy to watch. All that hard work paid off as he became one of the top jumpers in the conference. His season was capped off with a well-deserved school record. Shane would typically jump at the beginning of meets, and he always got the team off to a great start and got us excited for the rest of the meet. He has left a great work ethic behind that will carry on with the younger athletes.”

-New London track and field co-head coach Nick Schaefer

Micah Backus (11)/Bryar Tuchscherer (10)/Brennan Strosenruether (10)/Devin Winkler (12) (Third Team All-Bay – 1,600-Meter Relay): “These gentlemen all play an important role in this very difficult and exciting relay. We have a number of individuals competing in the open 400-meter event, and these four guys are definitely some of our top 400 sprinters. They work hard, support one another and are all returners for next year. We are excited to see what they will do and are happy for the success they’ve had this track season.”

-New London track and field co-head coach Amber Yerkey

Noah Schiedermyer (10, Third Team All-Bay – 3,200-Meter Run): “Noah made great strides as a racer this past season. He has phenomenal talent and a great attitude. For most of the season, his strongest event was the 1600, which benefited him in a slower race at conference in the 3,200.  As a sophomore, he is just scratching the surface of what he is capable of and has a bright future.”

-New London track and field co-head coach Nick Schaefer

Riley Titterton (9, Third Team All-Bay – 800-Meter Run): “Riley made himself known to the rest of the conference this season as a freshman. He has a very wide range as he is capable of running solid events from 400 through the 3,200. Riley truly did shine in the 800 this year where he was one of the top freshmen in the entire state. He has the ability to run through pain and push himself to the limit. As he gets more experience, he will turn into a great team leader for us.”

-New London track and field co-head coach Nick Schaefer

Brayden Kurth (11)/Bryar Tuchscherer (10)/Parker Fermanich (11)/Vinny Winkler (10) (Third Team All-Bay – 800-Meter Relay): “These four gentlemen are all great sprinters and have a full list of events they compete in at every meet. They work hard, have a great attitude and are both mentally and physically tough competitors. They spent additional time at practice perfecting exchanges, which helped create opportunities for success allowing them to place first at multiple meets in this event throughout the season.”

-New London track and field co-head coach Amber Yerkey

Boys Golf

Landon Elsner (12, First Team All-Bay): “Landon has been playing golf a long time and has a strong passion for the game. He has come to the level he is at because of all the work that he has put in. His ball striking and ability to putt at a high level are attributes that set him apart from others.”

-New London boys golf head coach Kurt Schommer

Dylan Leahy (11, Second Team All-Bay): “Dylan is one of the hardest workers on the team. He works hard on all aspects of his game, preparing him for anything that comes up on the course. He was our most improved golfer this year for good reasons. Dylan has a very bright future, and I expect him to compete for the best golfer in our conference next year.”

-New London boys golf head coach Kurt Schommer

Matt Fletcher (12, Second Team All-Bay): “Matt is a very consistent, strong golfer. Like Landon, Matt has worked countless hours on his game over the past four years. He deserves all of the credit he’s earned because of the work that has been put in. Matt’s ability to turn a bad shot into a par, or sometimes a bogey, is something unlike I have seen with a lot of golfers.”

-New London boys golf head coach Kurt Schommer

Will Cooley (12, Honorable Mention All-Bay): “Will is a very nice golfer who has been playing for a long time. Will may not be the furthest hitter, but knows how to play courses and the game of golf in general. When Will is putting well, he is hard to beat.”

-New London boys golf head coach Kurt Schommer
