Ninth OWI charged

A Clintonville man was arrested after police found him asleep at the wheel.

Benjamin J. Stilp, 46, is charged with a ninth drunken driving offense.

He remains in custody after Judge Troy Nielsen ordered a $5,000 cash bond as a condition of his release.

Shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office advised Weyauwega Police Officer Lydia Buntrock that Stilp had been involved in an argument and may be on his way to AAA Hardwoods on the 900 block of Lakeview Lane.

When she arrived at the business, she found a parked vehicle matching the description provided by Outagamie County.

According to the criminal complaint, Stilp was in the driver’s seat, sleeping. Buntrock knocked on the window and woke him.

When Stilp opened the door, Bontrock reported smelling alcohol.

Stilp reportedly said he consumed five to six beers before leaving the house after the argument.

A preliminary breath test indicated he had a .06 blood-alcohol concentration. Due to multiple OWI offenses, Stilp’s legal limit is .02 BAC.

He has eight prior drunken driving convictions between 1991 and 2012, according to court records.

In 2012, Stilp was sentenced to one year in jail as a condition of three years of probation, ordered to install an ignition interlocking device for two years, assessed $302 and his license revoked for three years.

Stilp faces up to 12 1/2 years in prison if convicted.
