Officer wounded in Mukwa shootout

Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Mukwa man after an officer was wounded in a shootout at his home south of New London Friday, Sept. 8.

James D. Dax, 62, is in custody at Waupaca County Jail on pending charges of attempted homicide for shooting at officers.

SWAT teams were executing a search warrant and arrest warrant at Dax’s residence, E9133 Manske Road, before 3 p.m., when Dax and officers exchanged gunfire. An officer was struck by a bullet during the exchange, suffering a non-life-threatening injury.

Authorities went to Dax’s residence because he was wanted for domestic abuse and aggravated battery. Police said in a criminal complaint that last month Dax allegedly abused his wife at home. including punching her in the back and stomping on her legs.

A warrant from his arrest was issued Aug. 31. He remained at large until the confrontation on Friday.

Responding to the scene with Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office were SWAT teams from Waupaca County, Outagamie County and Wood County; Brown/Outagamie County Bomb Squad; Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office; New London Fire Department; Gold Cross Ambulance; and Weyauwega Police Department.

The incident remains under investigation. More details will be released later, Waupaca County Sheriff Brad Hardel stated in a news release.

Dax was also accused of shooting at an officer in 2012.
