WHS presents ‘Sister Act’

Musical takes stage in November

Rehearsals for Waupaca High School’s upcoming fall musical, “Sister Act the Musical,” are in full swing.

The show dates are 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nov. 9-11, with the final performance a 2:30 p.m. matinee Sunday, Nov. 12, in the high school’s Performing Arts Center.

Tickets go on sale Monday, Oct. 30 at WHS, both in person or by calling 715-258-4131, ext. 1028.

The musical comedy is based on the 1992 film, with music written by Tony and Oscar winner Alan Menken.

It was nominated for five Tony awards in 2011, including Best Musical.

When rising disco diva star Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place police officers are sure she will not be found – a convent.

Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and the uptight Mother Superior.

Using her disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community.

However, in doing so, she blows her cover.

Soon the mobsters are chasing her down, only to end up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.

The high school’s Concert Choir singers are all part of the production, working to prepare a show under the direction of Kathy Alan and Monica Reeves.

Each student has a role to play, whether on stage, behind the scenes, in the orchestra or as light and sound crew.

The Theater Tech Class is currently building the set under the guidance of Dave Larson, and the Art Club and Rachel Akey will be putting the final touches on the set with their painting and creative artwork.

The “Sister Act” cast list includes Erin Harger as Deloris, Mary Zelinske as Mother Superior, Connor Andersen as Monsignor O‘Hara, Bailey Seefeldt as Sr. Mary Robert, Mady Waid as Sr. Mary Lazarus, Kathy Zamarripa as Sr. Mary Patrick, Bella Udoni as Sr. Mary Theresa, Justine Panzenhagen as Sr. Mary Martin of Tours, Sophia Butkiewicz as Sr. Mary Stephen, Cole Glass as Curtis, Ian Mast as Ernie, Derek Emerson as TJ, Sam Abrahamson as Joey, David Pacheco-Rojas as Pablo and Nate Wachsmuth as Eddie.

Portraying the Sisters of the Queen Of Angels community are Myra Buelow, Lulu Buerger, Serena Engel, Chloe Hamm, Kelsey Leaf, Amanda Mallasch, Molly Montgomery, Hannah Novak, Tirzah Piencikowski and Laura Saunders.

“Please watch for more information in the Waupaca County Post in the weeks to come. The Waupaca High School Music Department is excited to present another fine musical show to the students, staff and community of Waupaca,” said Alan.
