By Greg Seubert

It looks like Freedom is once again one of the top wrestling teams in the North Eastern Conference.

The Irish recorded six pins and a pair of technical falls Dec. 21 in a 73-6 win over Waupaca at Waupaca High School.

Waupaca’s only points came on a forfeit to John Schmidt at 106 pounds. By then, the Irish had built a 52-0 lead.

Reece Manteuffel opened the dual by pinning Waupaca’s Ron Mason in 1:13 at 138. Ivan Coenen picked up an 18-2 technical fall over Jesse Frisk at 145, Sam Peters pinned Jake Pankratz in 1:53 at 152, Troy Nabbefeld handed Garret Miller a 17-2 technical fall at 160, Dakota Brockman pinned Kyle Hamm in 1:19 at 170, Adam Brueckner pinned Kai Badgley in 45 seconds at 195, Matt Verhasselt pinned Mark Kilcoyne in 50 seconds at 220, Colby McHugh pinned Tanner Johnson in 4:52 at 126 and Koy Murphy wrapped up the meet with a 4-2 win over Colby Bernhardt at 132.

Waupaca also forfeited matches to Carsten McHugh (113), Colton Kater (120), Brody Brozewski (182) and Grant Williamson (285).

The Comets will travel to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Friday and Saturday, Dec. 29-30, for the Oshkosh on the Water Invitational before hosting Wrightstown for a North Eastern dual Thursday, Jan. 11.
