Waupaca to wrap up season on road

By Greg Seubert

It didn’t take long to see Zane Short was in for a big night.

The Denmark junior scored 11 of his team’s first 16 points and the Vikings went on to hand Waupaca a 68-56 North Eastern Conference loss Feb. 15 on the Comets’ home court.

Short finished with a game-high 23 points on the Comets’ annual Parents’ Night.

Waupaca’s only lead of the game – 4-2 – came in the opening minute. The Vikings eventually built an 11-point lead and had a 32-27 advantage at halftime.

Short gave the Vikings a 44-33 lead midway through the second half, but the Comets scored the next eight points to cut the lead to 46-43. Brandon Wanty started the run with a pair of three-pointers.

Waupaca never got any closer down the stretch, however, as Denmark answered with a 19-4 run to take a 65-47 lead.

“We battled all the way through,” coach Matt Bredesen said. “When we got down, we really didn’t have any quit.”

Wanty and Hunter Marcom led the Comets with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Waupaca will head to Wrightstown Monday, Feb. 19, before wrapping up the regular season Thursday, Feb. 22, against Luxemburg-Casco in Luxemburg.
