By Greg Seubert

Maybe the third time will be the charm.

After splitting their first two games during the regular season, the Wisconsin Valley Union girls’ hockey team has another date with the Central Wisconsin Storm.

The teams will play for a sectional championship at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Greenheck Field House in Weston. WVU received the top seed in its sectional bracket, while the Storm is a No. 2 seed.

WVU opened WIAA tournament play Feb. 21 with a 4-1 win over Lakeland at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center, while the Storm, the defending state champions, needed overtime Feb. 20 to knock off the Fox Cities Stars 1-0.

Four Union players – including Waupaca’s Anna Ryder and Markie Ash – scored for the Eagles.

Alayna Bruneau and Kendra Robinson scored to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. Ryder’s unassisted goal with 6:28 remaining in the second period gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into the final period.

Lakeland’s Asucena Boyer cut the lead to 3-1 3:22 into the third period, but Ash answered 3 1/2 minutes with a power play goal that turned out to be the game’s final score.

The Union outshot the Thunderbirds 25-15.
