Deer Creek fire a homicide, authorities say

Dana L. Nachtrab, 27, of Deer Creek was arrested in connection with a house fire that killed her brother.

Cody Nachtrab, 23, died in the fire that occurred at W10721 Pine Road, Deer Creek after 11 p.m. Monday, March 12.

Dana Nachtrab was arrested for first-degree reckless homicide and arson, according to Outagamie County Sheriff’s Sgt. Nathan Borman in a news release Wednesday, March 14.

She was not charged as of midday Thursday, March 15.

The fire occurred after 11 p.m. The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office, Bear Creek Fire Department, Manawa Fire Department, Shiocton Fire Department and Clintonville Ambulance responded to the scene.

Three residents including a toddler escaped the house fire.

The sheriff’s office did not release further information, citing an ongoing investigation into the fire and death. Anyone with information can direct tips to Lt. Christopher Proietti at 920-832-5629.

Court records show Dana Nachtrab was living at the residence as of February, when she was charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor disorderly conduct in Outagamie County Circuit Court.

Last year in Waupaca County Circuit Court she was charged in two separate misdemeanor cases of operating a motor vehicle while revoked.

She pleaded no contest to one of the charges and was ordered to pay a $516 fine. She entered a not guilty plea in the other case and the charge was dismissed but read into the court record.

Just after her 18th birthday in 2008, Nachtrab was convicted of misdemeanor causing injury while operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol in Shawano County Circuit Court.

She served 30 days in jail, lost her driver’s license for a year, was ordered to participate in an alcohol assessment and had to pay a fine.

Charges of operating under the influence, operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration of .10 or more-first offense, and causing injury while operating with PAC were dismissed on a prosecutor’s motion.

Cody Nachtrab was a 2014 Clintonville High School graduate. According to his obituary, he loved tractors, food, dancing and shopping with his family. His father, Steven, died last summer.

Cody Nachtrab’s memorial service will be held Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville. A memorial fund has been established for his family.
