No contaminants in parade candy

Police close investigation

Candy distributed at the New Dublin Grand Parade on March 17 tested negative for controlled substances, the New London Police Department announced Tuesday, April 3.

New London Police Chief Jeffrey Schlueter stated in a news release investigators were unable to prove the candy was tampered with or a crime was committed.

NLPD is not investigating further.

The Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory tested three candy items:

  • A Tootsie Roll that a person reported experiencing symptoms.
  • An orange fruit Tootsie Roll containing a dark spot that appeared in a photo circulated on social media.
  • A Twix wrapper with residue that a person reported experiencing symptoms after eating the candy bar.

Police did not receive new reports of symptoms since the days immediately following the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Schlueter said police are unsure what caused people’s symptoms.

In March, NLPD received 10 complaints from people including children who experienced numbness and rashes after coming into contact with the candy. Police advised attendees to throw away any candy they received that day.
