New London boys’ golf preview

Q&A with head coach Kurt Schommer

By Erik Buchinger

Number of years as head coach: Third.

Returning varsity athletes: Dylan Leahy (12).

Athletes to watch: Dylan Leahy (12), Rickey Knudsen (11).

Team goals/expectations: One team goal of ours is to be competitive at every match we participate in. We lost 80 percent of our varsity team from last year due to graduation, which means there are a lot of open spots on varsity. We expect younger players to rise up and compete at the varsity level.

Team’s strengths: Work ethic, team chemistry and coachability.

Team’s weaknesses: Lack of Varsity experience

Team(s) to beat in conference: Xavier and West De Pere

Biggest games on the schedule: Our conference matches are the most important matches to us.

What you want your athletes to get out of this season: My hope is that each student-athlete improves on their game, understands what it takes to be a productive golfer at the varsity level and enjoys the fun and competitive experiences they will encounter throughout the season.

Why fans should be excited for this year’s team: We have a lone returning senior in Dylan Leahy, who will compete for Player of the Year in the Bay Conference. We also have a lot of open spots on varsity, so it is exciting to see which players will rise up to the challenge because there are so many spots available.
