New London wins at Fox Cities Stadium

By Erik Buchinger

The New London baseball team took the field at Fox Cities Stadium and came away with a 6-2 win over Shawano on Tuesday, May 8.

Fox Cities Stadium is the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers minor league baseball team as well as the site for the WIAA State Baseball Tournament, which is scheduled to start on June 12.

“It was a great atmosphere here at Fox Cities Stadium,” New London pitcher Logan Locy said. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, but hopefully we’re back here in June.”

Dylan Moeller drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI single to score Landon Guyette.

Locy retired the first six batters of the game but allowed his only two runs of the game in the third inning, as Shawano went ahead 2-1.

Locy threw all seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.

“On the mound, it felt like Hatten,” Locy said. “It felt like home, and I’m really happy with how tonight went.”

The Bulldogs regained the lead in the bottom half of the third on a run-scoring double by Tucker Kohl to score Blake Dey. Kohl scored on a single hit by Locy to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.

“I have been seeing the ball well lately, so I’ve just been trying to keep doing what I’ve been doing,” Kohl said. “Baseball is the same game it’s always been, so I’m just trying to do the little things.”

Kohl finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and scored a run.

Locy knocked in another run in the fifth and scored on a RBI single from Myles Parker to extend New London’s lead to three runs.

The Bulldogs added another insurance run in the sixth with another run-scoring hit from Kohl to give New London a 6-2 advantage.

“We were hitting the ball well,” Kohl said. Logan was outstanding on the mound, so that really helped us, and we were able to get him some run support tonight.”

Locy shut down Shawano in the seventh to secure the complete-game victory in addition to his 2-for-3 performance at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.

“With the feel of the whole stadium, even though it wasn’t packed seats, it was still a much bigger atmosphere warming up in the bullpen,” Locy said. “Getting to pitch on the mound was unbelievable.”

New London shortstop Kyle Wolf also finished with two hits with a stolen base and one run scored. He said he was excited to play where he used to watch the Timber Rattlers play as a kid.

“It’s gorgeous, and it’s a dream come true,” Wolf said. “I came to a lot of them as a young kid, and it was always a dream to come play here. It’s really fun.”
