Date Night at Rec

Rec Center gives parents some time out

By Angie Landsverk

Waupaca’s Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring another Date Night.

It is being held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, at the Recreation Center.

Open to children ages 4 to 10, the cost is $5 per child.

Parents may register at apm.activecommunities.com/waupacaparknrec/Activity_Search/2018-date-night/722 or at the center’s office.

The center is registering 45 children.

On Date Night, parents drop their children off at the center and then head out for a date.

This is the second date night the center is holding.

The first one was in early 2017.

Sandy Abraham, a member of the youth center’s staff, said the evening includes games and treats for the children.

The youth center is closed to older youth that night.

New ideas continue to be introduced at the center.

Abraham said recent events include a mother/son picnic, bingo night and food pantry drive.

Those who brought food items there on the youth center night received free entry.

The items were donated to the Waupaca Area Food Pantry.

Upcoming events include a mother/daughter princess night dinner, father/son sports night, puzzle contest, scavenger hunt and garbage pickup throughout the community.

Other ideas are to have a root beer float and painting night and to chalk the sidewalks outside the center.

John Cross is also a member of the youth center’s staff.

Through games, activities and donations, the center is raising money for a tree to be planted outside the center, he said.

“We hope to have it in place next fall,” Cross said. “If adequate funds are received, we also hope to add more shrubbery and make it look more welcoming.”

Of the youth center’s staff, Abraham said, “I’m so proud of these people. They’re here for the kids. Special thanks to John Cross for planning special events.”
