Comets win NEC meet

Waupaca shares golf title

By Greg Seubert

If the Waupaca boys’ golf team was going to win a North Eastern Conference championship, the Comets had to take care of business and get a little help.

That’s exactly what happened May 16 at the conference meet at the Brown County Country Club in Hobart.

The Comets entered the meet in third place in the conference standings behind Luxemburg-Casco and Marinette, but ended up sharing the overall championship with Luxemburg-Casco after winning the 10-team meet by three strokes over Marinette.

Waupaca won the meet with a score of 344, followed by Marinette (347), Luxemburg-Casco (349), Wrightstown (356), Freedom (361), Little Chute (373), Fox Valley Lutheran (379), Oconto Falls (383), Clintonville (401) and Denmark (422).

Eli Bartel, the Comets’ No. 3 golfer, led the team with an 82 that included a 42 on the front nine and a 40 on holes 10-18, while other scores for Waupaca were Noah Carrick, 83 (40, 43); Mason Gardner, 84 (46, 38); Asher Wright, 95 (49, 46); and Tyler Simpson, 96 (51, 45).

Gardner’s finish earned him a spot on the all-conference first team, while Carrick and Bartel made the second team.

A pair of Marinette golfers – Matt Wagner and Ty Kretz – shared medalist honors with a 79.

The top 12 also included Logan Cieslewicz, Wrightstown (81); Bartel and Andrew Spangler, Luxemburg-Casco (82); Carrick (83); Gardner and Noah Berg, Freedom (84); Brad Lentz, Fox Valley Lutheran (86); and Ben Naze, Luxemburg-Casco, Ryan Morris, Oconto Falls, and Clayton Rathsack, Oconto Falls (88).
