Driver charged with 14th OWI

Deputy responds to crash in King

Daniel W. Nordell, 64, Almond, is charged with a felony offense of operating while intoxicated.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, a 911 caller reported a sports utility vehicle had crashed into a utility pole outside her home on Grandview Road, in King.

When Waupaca County Deputy Curtis Much arrived at the scene, he saw skid marks in the driveway, and evidence the SUV hit a fire number, mailbox, 25 mph speed limit sign and a utility pole.

The pole was leaning, but not knocked down. The wires had not snapped.

A witness told Much she heard the crash. When she went outside, she saw the driver backing his heavily damaged vehicle away from the pole and into her driveway.

According to the criminal complaint, Nordell told Much he had three beers within three hours and that faulty brakes were the cause of the crash.

A preliminary breath test indicated Nordell had a 0.17 blood-alcohol concentration, more than twice the legal limit. However, due to prior OWI convictions, Nordell is restricted to a .02 BAC.

Nordell has 13 prior drunken driving convictions between February 1994 and March 2006.

After his last conviction in 2006, Waupaca County sentenced Nordell to three years in state prison and three years extended supervision.

This followed a 2002 Waushara County sentence of three years in prison with two years of extended supervision. Waushara County revoked Nordell’s supervision after his 2006 Waupaca County conviction and sentenced him to serve an additional year and three months in prison.

In 2009, Waupaca County revoked Nordell’s extended supervision and ordered that he be reconfined for one more year.
Nordell is currently in custody on a $25,000 cash bond.

He faces a maximum of 15 years and a minimum of four years in prison if convicted.
