Driver charged with obstructing

Deputies say suspect swallowed the evidence

Patrick H. Williams, 27, Lac Du Flambeau, is charged with one count of obstructing an officer and two counts of felony bail jumping.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on May 24, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy Brittany Mathewson responded to a 911 call reporting an erratic driver in a red Impala on U.S. Highway 10 near Weyauwega.

When she pulled the vehicle over, Mathewson saw the driver, identified as Williams, digging around in the center console.

When she ordered him to stop, Williams continued searching through the console, according to the criminal complaint.

Williams then turned off his radio and said he was looking for his driver’s license.

Deputy James Santiago arrived at the scene to assist.

Mathewson noticed a small plastic bag of blue pills on the driver’s side of the floorboard.

She asked Williams what the pills were.

Williams reportedly responded, “What pills?” and placed his foot over the bag.

Mathewson ordered Williams to exit the vehicle.

As Mathewson placed her flashlight back into her pocket, she heard Santiago yell, “What is he reaching for?”

Mathewson reported that Williams grabbed the bag of pills, dumped them into his mouth and began chugging a can of soda.

The deputies then attempted to remove Williams from the car, but he crossed his arms and they could not remove his seat belt, the complaint says.

Eventually, the deputies forced Williams out of the car, handcuffed and arrested him.

In addition to his criminal charges, Williams was cited for operating while suspended, operating without carrying a license and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Williams was released from custody the following day on a $2,000 signature bond.

On June 5, Williams failed to make a scheduled court appearance in Waupaca County, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He is currently in Vilas County jail.

Williams was charged with felony delivery of narcotics in Vilas County on June 2, 2017, and released on a $250 cash bond.

He was convicted of felony delivery of narcotics in Vilas County on July 25, 2014, and placed on three years of probation.
